The French were exposed to Americanisation by way of the troops that arrived on their doorstep in the 1940s with lace stockings and bubblegum, as I'm sure you know, but what always surprised me is the way the Left also capitulated to these influences. Sartre, de Beauvoir and Camus spent their evenings dancing to jazz music, for example, or watching American films.
