Porto Cathedral

THE construction of the Sé do Porto first began in 1110 under the direction of Bishop Hugo and was finally completed in the thirteenth century. The style of the building is Romanesque, with additional Gothic and Baroque features, and it remains one of the oldest monuments in the city of Porto itself.
In 1333, the funerary chapel of João Gordo was added. João had been a Knight Hospitaller in the service of King Dinis I (1261–1325), also known as the Farmer King (Rei Lavrador) or Poet King (Rei Poeta).
The Cathedral was also the site for the famous marriage between King João I of Portugal (1357–1433) and his English spouse, Philippa of Lancaster (1360–1415), which took place on February 2nd, 1387.
